2021 Western Amateur Championship Preview

Live Stream Available on Golf Channel's Digital Platorms

By Brian Weis

The excitement and drama of the 119th Western Amateur Championship at Glen View Club will be streamed live on Golf Channel's digital platforms, the Western Golf Association announced this year.

"We're excited for this opportunity to showcase our flagship amateur championship and the international field of elite players who compete for this coveted title," said John Kaczkowski, WGA president and CEO. "Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and many others have competed in the Western Amateur. Now, fans across the globe can watch the game's future stars face off in golf's most rigorous test."

Beginning with the Sweet 16 match play competition at historic Glen View Club in Glenview, Illinois, the WGA expects to provide more than 12 hours of live streaming coverage on Friday, July 30, and Saturday, July 31, bringing the action of golf's third-oldest amateur championship to the homes and mobile devices of fans worldwide. The live stream will be sponsored by WGA partners BMW and Peter Millar and will be available at GolfChannel.com and thewesternamateur.com, with replays on the Peacock streaming service and golfpass.com.

On Friday, July 30, fans can watch the finish of the eight Sweet 16 matches from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. CT on GolfChannel.com. Coverage will resume from 3-6 p.m. CT for the finish of the quarterfinal matches.

On Saturday, July 31, coverage of the two semifinal matches will run from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. CT. The championship match will be streamed in its entirety, with an expected starting time of 1 p.m. CT.

Live coverage will be supported by interviews, championship highlights and features on the history of the WGA, Western Amateur and Glen View Club. The WGA is working with Thaler Media in Palm Beach, Florida, to produce the two days of live coverage as well as pre-produced content and social media interactions with golf fans. David Marr III and Steve Scott - the 1999 Western Amateur champion - will call the action, and five-time PGA TOUR winner Mark Wilson will provide on-course reporting.

"We're looking forward to providing golf fans with a professional, broadcast-quality production that will showcase the skills of our field of top amateur golfers," said Vince Pellegrino, WGA senior vice president of tournaments. "We're thankful to our partners at BMW and Peter Millar for helping bring the Western Amateur to a broader audience."

The championship is returning to the site of the first Western Amateur in 1899, as Glen View Club will host from July 26-31. Competition includes 18-hole stroke play rounds on Tuesday and Wednesday followed by a cut to the players with the low 44 scores and ties. Those who make the cut play 36 holes of stroke play on Thursday, with the low 16 advancing to match play.

Founded in 1899, the Western Amateur is the world's third-oldest amateur championship behind the British Amateur (1885) and the U.S. Amateur (1895). It regularly attracts the top amateur players from across the country and around the world. Past champions include Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods.

The 2021 Western Amateur will feature one of the strongest fields ever, led by defending champion Pierceson Coody, the No. 2-ranked amateur in the world. An All-American from Texas and a member of the 2021 U.S. Walker Cup team, Coody won the 2020 Western Amateur at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana.
Coody is one of three former Western Amateur champions in the field. Cole Hammer, Coody's teammate at Texas and in the Walker Cup, won the 2018 Western Amateur at Sunset Ridge Country Club in Northfield, Illinois. Garrett Rank won the 2019 event at Point O' Woods Golf & Country Club in Benton Harbor, Michigan.

The field also includes U.S. Walker Cup team members Ricky Castillo (Florida), William Mouw (Pepperdine) and Steward Hagestad; First Team All-Americans Noah Goodwin (SMU) and Peter Fountain (North Carolina); First Team All-SEC pick Sam Bennett (Texas A&M), the No. 7-ranked amateur in the world; and international standouts Puwit Anupansuebsai (Thailand), Bo Jin (China) and Yuxin Lin (China).

About: Brian Weis

Brian Weis Brian Weis is the mastermind behind GolfTrips.com, a vast network of golf travel and directory sites covering everything from the rolling fairways of Wisconsin to the sunbaked desert layouts of Arizona. If there’s a golf destination worth visiting, chances are, Brian has written about it, played it, or at the very least, found a way to justify a "business trip" there.

As a card-carrying member of the Golf Writers Association of America (GWAA), International Network of Golf (ING), Golf Travel Writers of America (GTWA), International Golf Travel Writers Association (IGTWA), and The Society of Hickory Golfers (SoHG), Brian has the credentials to prove that talking about golf is his full-time job. In 2016, his peers even handed him The Shaheen Cup, a prestigious award in golf travel writing—essentially the Masters green jacket for guys who don’t hit the range but still know where the best 19th holes are.

Brian’s love for golf goes way back. As a kid, he competed in junior and high school golf, only to realize that his dreams of a college golf scholarship had about the same odds as a 30-handicap making a hole-in-one. Instead, he took the more practical route—working on the West Bend Country Club grounds crew to fund his University of Wisconsin education. Little did he know that mowing greens and fixing divots would one day lead to a career writing about the best courses on the planet.

In 2004, Brian turned his golf passion into a business, launching GolfWisconsin.com. Three years later, he expanded his vision, and GolfTrips.com was born—a one-stop shop for golf travel junkies looking for their next tee time. Today, his empire spans all 50 states, and 20+ international destinations.

On the course, Brian is a weekend warrior who oscillates between a 5 and 9 handicap, depending on how much he's been traveling (or how generous he’s feeling with his scorecard). His signature move" A high, soft fade that his playing partners affectionately (or not-so-affectionately) call "The Weis Slice." But when he catches one clean, his 300+ yard drives remind everyone that while he may write about golf for a living, he can still send a ball into the next zip code with the best of them.

Whether he’s hunting down the best public courses, digging up hidden gems, or simply outdriving his buddies, Brian Weis is living proof that golf is more than a game—it’s a way of life.
