Every golf buddy trip to Florida starts the same way. Somebody fires up a spreadsheet, somebody else says "Orlando," and forty minutes later you are looking at $250 green fees and a hotel that charges for parking. Then one guy in the group text, the quiet one who actually reads things, says: what about Sebring?

Trust the quiet guy.

Sebring sits about an hour south of the theme parks in Highlands County, out where the cattle ranches and orange groves start and the Mouse's reach ends. It is Old Florida with a scorecard. The Citrus Golf Trail ties together eight courses across Sebring, Avon Park and Lake Placid, and all of them are a short drive from one hotel, Inn on the Lakes, that has quietly built the best golf package I have seen in the state.

The Package That Makes the Trip

Here is the deal, and read it twice because it sounds like a misprint. Stay and Play at Inn on the Lakes starts at $109 per person per night, double occupancy. That gets you the room, a round of golf for two with cart, hot breakfast for two at Chicanes, and all-day happy hour in the Chicanes Bar for your entire stay.

I have paid more than $109 for a single round in Naples and gotten a warm bottle of water and a stern look from the starter. In Sebring that number covers golf, a bed, eggs and a discount on the bourbon. Pricing moves with the season and there are some course restrictions, so lock in your dates early for winter, but the math holds up any way you run it.

The Inn itself has more than 155 rooms and suites on the lake, ranked number one in Highlands County on TripAdvisor, with the kind of staff who remember your name on day two. Chicanes, if you are wondering about the name, is a nod to the racetrack down the road. More on that in a minute.

The Island Green Everybody Talks About

Sun 'N Lake Golf Club is the anchor of the Trail, a 36-hole facility north of town that gets voted the top golf spot in the county year after year. Two courses, two very different personalities.

Deer Run is the big one. Don Dyer laid it out in 1976 and Ron Garl reworked it in 2003, and it plays long, with elevated greens that are small, undulating and unforgiving if you miss on the wrong side. This is where the qualifiers for the developmental tours show up every year, which tells you what you need to know about the setup. Then you get to 18. Garl converted the finishing hole into a par three with an island green. From the whites it is about 145 yards, which is a stock 8 iron for most of your group and a full-blown crisis for at least one of them. How many courses in America end on a par three over water? Not many, and none of them are more fun to bet on.

Turtle Run is the younger sibling, a 1999 Charles Ankrom design that tops out around 6,400 yards and does not care how far you hit driver, because you will not be hitting it much. Narrow landing areas, mounds, deep bunkers and slick greens. Brains over brawn. It is also the prettier of the two, winding through pines and water, and the one the locals drive 30 miles to play.

Play them both. Play Turtle Run first so your ego is still intact for the island green.

A Donald Ross Course With a Story

Twenty minutes up the road in Avon Park is Pinecrest Golf Club, and if you are the type who plans trips around architects, this is your reason to come.

Donald Ross came to Avon Park in 1926 to oversee construction of the course, which was built as the amenity for a grand hotel on Lake Lotela that catered to wealthy Chicagoans escaping the winter. The guest list ran from Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig to Burns and Allen, FDR and Grover Cleveland. Local legend says Al Capone worked on his tan and his short game here, which would make him the only guy in the Chicago outfit who understood false fronts.

In the late 1950s, Pinecrest hosted the World Championship of Golf, the first nationally televised PGA event, won by Cary Middlecoff. The hotel is long gone, done in by termites and time and razed in 2007, but the course survived, first under the city and then bought by the members. It is semi-private and open to guest play year-round.

What you get is a real Ross layout. Wide fairways, gently rolling ground, crowned greens with false fronts that shed a timid approach back down the slope, and not one house on the property. The fairways run along orange groves and old pine woods instead of screened-in pool cages. Summer rates dip to about $20, which is less than a sleeve of the good balls you are about to lose in the lake.

Round Out the Week

The Trail runs deeper than most groups can handle in one trip. Highlands Ridge has 36 holes of its own in Avon Park. River Greens and Placid Lakes cover the south end down toward Lake Placid. Golf Hammock and the Country Club of Sebring are close to the Inn, and Sebring Muni is the local's local. Five days of golf without repeating a course is not a stretch here, and the Inn will build the package around whichever ones you want.

Racing Fans, This Is Your Trip

Sebring International Raceway is America's oldest road racing track, built on the old Hendricks Army Airfield, and the 12 Hours of Sebring is one of the great endurance races in the world. In 2027 it turns 75. The Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring runs March 17-20, 2027, and it will be a zoo in the best possible way. Book the Inn the day you finish reading this sentence, because race week rooms go fast and the Chicanes Bar becomes the paddock's unofficial living room.

If you would rather see the track without the crowds, the HSR Sebring Classic 12 Hour brings vintage race cars to town February 10-14, 2027, and Pistons and Props pairs historic cars and warbirds in early December. Golf in the morning, engines in the afternoon, happy hour all day. That is a schedule.

After the Round

Chicanes at the Inn covers dinner and the all-day happy hour, and you will not need a designated driver to get back to your room. For something with more sawdust on the floor, Cowpoke's Watering Hole is the local steak and honky-tonk stop that every golfer who visits Sebring ends up at eventually. Downtown Sebring is built around a circle, which is charming until you have circled it three times looking for parking.

For couples, Highlands Hammock State Park is one of the oldest and best state parks in Florida, with a boardwalk through old-growth cypress swamp and a real chance of seeing a gator that is not on a golf course for once. Lake Jackson, right outside the Inn, does a sunset that will make you forget the three-putt on the island green.

The Verdict

Is the Citrus Golf Trail the best golf value in Florida? I have played the big-money resorts and the tourist-corridor courses, and I keep coming back to the same number. One hundred and nine dollars. Room, round, breakfast, happy hour. A Donald Ross course for the price of a pizza. An island green finish for the price of a bet with your buddies. And a racetrack down the road that has been running since before most golf resorts in this state were a drawing on a napkin.

Bring your clubs, bring the group, and bring the quiet guy who suggested it. He earned a beer.
